On a recent trip to Sydney, as I walked down the Pitt St. Mall, I noticed something interesting: everything seemed so much brighter and larger than life.

I hadn’t been to Sydney for a while, and now that the scaffolding had come down and the new Westfield Centre was open for business, the area had truly become a world-class retail centre in every way. The design aspect was well thought out and was a feast for the visual shopper.

The façades were new and exciting, something not seen before in Australia. I was in awe as the large window expanses made the stores look luxurious and inviting. This feeling of lightness and richness made even mainstream stores like Esprit look larger than life. I was even drawn into the Nespresso store to experience the delicious aromas of coffee.

My exhilarating experience spanned from Pitt St. Mall all the way around to Castlereagh Street where Gucci and Prada sit. I found I really love the use of large windows because it sets the mood for the customers to have a truly luxurious shopping experience.

So when you’re designing your new store, think about your windows. Is bigger really better?
